The Roots of Algorithmic Injustice: Intersections of Colonialism, Systems of Oppression, and Technology

In this session we’ll discuss how technology is a tool that exists within a social and political context that it cannot be meaningfully separated from — specifically colonization and systems of oppression. We’ll dive deeper into these issues in the form of a collective education session on what colonization is and how it manifests in our day-to-day lives. Then we’ll highlight the intersections of colonialism and capitalism and how we can take a radical approach to dismantle these systems within our own hearts, minds, and work.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? –I’ll be presenting a talk on colonization, capitalism, and technology. It will be followed by a community discussion.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session? –

To raise awareness within the digital rights sphere on decolonization and anti-racist action being core to our work, as opposed to being a separate issue.
To highlight the intersections of colonialism and capitalism as it manifests in our day-to-day lives, and how we can take a radical approach to dismantle these systems within our own hearts, minds, and work.

We’re hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session. –The goal of this session is to inspire everyone to reflect deeply on oppressive systems that have been internalized within themselves and in their work.
